Pop-Up Coastal Museum To Visit The District

Resorting to the Coast’s pop-up ‘Marvellous Museum of Coastal Curiosities’ is visiting Tendring for the first time this summer.

This entertainment roadshow will be showcasing the unique and rich history of Tendring resorts, taking place around the district including Clacton, Frinton, Walton, Harwich, Dovercourt and Jaywick Sands.

The Museum of Coastal Curiosities is a highly interactive and immersive experience that will be crammed full of fascinating facts, seaside memorabilia and historic artefacts. The forgotten history of miniature zoos, killer whales and seaside entertainers will be brought to life with storytellers and, by popular demand, you can also expect Uncle Tacko and his incredible Flea Circus.

The tour starts on the first day of Clacton Airshow, meaning you can experience a historical day out as well as the beautiful aircraft displays, and all shows last from 10.30am-4pm.

Tour dates of where you can find The Grand Theatre of Lemmings and their ‘Museum of Coastal Curiosities’ (all 10.30am to 4pm) are:

  • Thursday August 23, Clacton Town Square
  • Friday August 24, Jaywick Martello Tower
  • Saturday August 25, Walton Lifeboat Museum
  • Sunday August 26, Frinton Greensward
  • Monday August 27, Harwich Redoubt
  • Thursday August 30, Walton Market Square
  • Friday August 31, Frinton Greensward
  • Saturday September 1, Clacton Town Square
  • Sunday September 2, Jaywick Martello Tower
  • Saturday/Sunday September 15-16, Harwich seafront

Local magician Luke Grint will perform at Walton on August 25 to accompany the Walton Maritime museum exhibition on the history of Len Blease, the locally-based magician and entertainer.

Once the touring with The Grand Theatre of Lemmings is finished, the Resorting to the Coast exhibition will be on display for one week at the Jaywick Martello Tower from September 5-12.

Resorting to the Coast has a grant of £316,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), as well as matched funding from Essex County Council and the commitment of volunteers, including local heritage groups, who are the driving force behind a range of activities. It is being supported by Tendring District Council.

Now in its second year, Resorting to the Coast has proactively engaged with local community groups and schools to bring the seaside heritage of Clacton, Frinton, Harwich/ Dovercourt, Jaywick Sands and Walton-on-the-Naze to life.

The event is great for the whole family – demonstrating the amazing history of the local towns as well as the talent of Lemmings. The Lemmings’ team of artists, creatives and researchers have worked tirelessly exploring each seaside history and tailored the tours with stories relating to each town they visit.

As well as professional performers, local volunteers have been trained in circus skills making this a real community event.

Sue Lissimore, Essex County Council Cabinet member for Culture and Communities, expressed her excitement for the tour.

“This is a new and different way of showcasing the great heritage of Tendring’s seaside resorts. It’s also a great chance for people from the different towns to learn about each other,” Cllr Lissimore said.

“I’m really excited for the public to see this pop-up museum. I’m hoping that children and adults alike all enjoy it.”

Mandy Rose, Artistic Director of The Lemmings, added: “We are so excited to be delivering this incredible project for the second year of Resorting to the Coast.

“We’re thrilled to be able to engage a whole new generation with their fun and varied seaside history and we can’t wait for everyone to see what our pop-up museum has in store.”

Mick Skeels, TDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Tourism, added: “This is an excellent addition to the line-up of fantastic events taking place in Tendring this summer, and promises to be great fun for all the family.”

Resorting to the Coast is looking for volunteers of all ages to help with each event.  Activities could include splat-a-rat, storytelling, hula hooping, dressing up and general fun.
