Vital Advice And Support Offered To Older People In Tendring

More than 120 older people packed into Clacton’s Princes Theatre for an event staged to give them advice and support on how to stay safe.   It was the fourth time that Older People’s Crucial Crew has been put on and it goes from strength to strength.   Seven 15 minute sessions were provided on a variety of subjects with the event taking place from 10am to 2pm yesterday.  Advice was given on safety inside and outside the home; scams and how to avoid them; and how to live healthier, independent lives.  Those attending were from various groups and organisations as well as individuals who signed up to take part.

Essex Police, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, Essex County Council Adult Operations, Elder Abuse, Healthwatch, Essex County Council Independent Living and Community Voluntary Services Tendring took the sessions.   The aim was to bring in people who will now act as ambassadors for their clubs and organisations and spread the word amongst their members.

Lynda McWilliams, Tendring District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Health and Education, said that the event seems to grow in popularity.  “We have had a full house for two years now and the feedback we received this time was again very positive,” she said.  “The idea came about as the Council organised crucial crew events for young people and we thought it would be important for the older and vulnerable members of the community as well.

“Some learnt about how to put a lock on their mobile phones; they received special credit card holders which prevent chips being read and Essex Fire and Rescue Service signed people up for home safety checks.”

Each of the organisations involved had speakers go round tables talking to small groups of around eight people for 15 minutes at a time and there were also stalls to visit to discuss issues in more detail.

A buffet lunch was provided by Love to Eat.
