Community Voluntary Services Tendring (CVST) and Simplicity Computers have joined forces to slash the cost of computing and make computers easier to use.

It’s a shocking statistic, but at least 16 million people in the UK can’t use a computer or do a basic online task, like send an email.  The majority are older people.  Many suffer from loneliness and isolation.  Communicating with friends and relatives online changes lives, and older people who are now users of computers talk about feeling part of the world again.

Many people will be thinking of giving an older relative or close friend a new PC or laptop for Christmas but this can be an expensive choice and the recipient is quite likely to find the computer too difficult to use.  That’s why millions are struggling with them, even after training.

Valerie Singleton - Blue Peter icon and Simplicity Computers director says that, ‘it’s easy to cut the cost of a computer and make them simpler to use. Instead of throwing out that old outdated computer, even though it’s in good working order, why not give it to a relative or friend for Christmas. It costs nothing and the PC can be made easy to use by installing our simplicity ENVELOPE® software’.

CVST are holding an event at their Community Information Centre in Rosemary Road in Clacton on Saturday December 14th, where local residents can bring their unused working computers and laptops to be given a new lease of life for their family members, friends or neighbours.  Experts from Simplicity Computers will be on hand to turn them from a Windows computer into a Simplicity Computer for less than £60.  Voluntary organisations, charities and residential and care homes in the area are also welcome to the event.

The doors are open from 10.30 – 13.30 and installing the new software takes about 30 minutes.  Computers can be dropped off while people do their Christmas shopping and collected on their way home or people can stay and have a cuppa whilst waiting and talk to Valerie Singleton on Skype! Val will be available from 11.00 to 12.30.

NOTE: We will only be able to install the software into used computers loaded with Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7.  Not Apple computers or PC’s loaded with Windows 8.  When the ENVELOPE software is installed, the user will be able to choose between the original Windows software and simplicity ENVELOPE®.
